St. Louis Memorializes Homeless who Died in 2009

On December 21, 2009, The Longest Night, a memorial service, was held at the Centenary Church - The homeless who died in 2009 were remembered by their neighbors and friends -There were 28 names read in honor of the dead.

Many social service agencies joined together in the memorial -Several agencies spoke of the challenges and clients from these agencies spoke of their experience as homeless people.

The City was represented by Mayor Slay who joined in our hope that one day this service will be non-existent when homelessness is finally eliminated.

David Koehr from St. Louis County Homeless Services also joined in the service with the hope that homelessness will cease to be.

Approximately 250 people attended the service.

This is a yearly service that was originally created by Dr. Gary Morse of Community Alternatives.

The event was covered on the Noon Show on KSDK with Art Holliday and was covered by the Post Dispatch.
